Dr. Alimantado is one of reggae’s true originals: a singer, deejay and producer whose voice helped shape the raw edge of roots and dub in the 1970s and beyond. Born Winston Thompson in Jamaica, he built a sound that felt instantly different: militant, eccentric, sharp and deeply rooted in the culture. He became best known for landmark releases like Best Dressed Chicken in Town and Born for a Purpose, records that still carry serious weight with reggae lovers, dub heads and collectors worldwide.
His style moved between chanting, toasting and roots songwriting, always with a feel that was rough-cut, hypnotic and unmistakably his own. Dr. Alimantado also worked as a producer and ran labels including Ital Sounds, Isda Records and Keyman Records, helping push his vision from multiple angles. His influence travelled far beyond Jamaica too, reaching punk and underground circles in the UK and Europe through the sheer force of his sound.
